cup of tea
Ever wonder how to steep the perfect cup of tea? Fear no more.... we've put together a  comprehensive list on how to steep each kind of tea to make the best flavor!

First, our Pin offers an at-a-glance view of how to steep tea. For our temperatures, you might need a thermometer, though. Below, we've explained just how to tell if your water's the right temperature without having to use a thermometer.

Black

cup of tea
The tea with the highest amount of caffeine and a ton of beneficial flavonoids (a type of antioxidant) is best enjoyed steeped in boiling-hot water.

To make a perfect cup of black tea:
Boil 8-12 ounces* (1 - 1.5 cups) of purified water
Drop in one teabag or 1.5 teaspoons** of loose leaves in a strainer
Cover & let sit for 3-6 minutes

Oolong

cup of tea
Oolong ranks second highest among tea types for caffeine content. It also tends to have a smokier flavor than black teas & brew a little lighter in tone.

To make a perfect cup of Oolong tea:
Bring 8-12 ounces of purified water to a boil
Drop in one teabag or 1.5 teaspoons of loose leaves in a strainer
Cover & steep for 2-8 minutes, to desired strength

Green

cup of tea
Everyone knows green tea is chock full of antioxidants & tastes great to boot!

To make a perfect cup of Green Tea:
Bring 8-12 ounces of purified water to a boil
Allow water to sit, off heat for 2-3 minutes (until water temperature is 155-180 degrees)
Drop in one teabag or 1.5 teaspoons of loose leaves in a strainer
Cover & steep for 1-4 minutes, to desired strength

White

cup of tea
With less caffeine and a subtle flavor, white teas are the perfect refreshing beverage. White tea could replace water or sodas perfectly as an afternoon alternative.

To make a perfect cup of White Tea:
Bring 8-12 ounces of purified water to a boil
Allow water to cool, off heat for 2-3 minutes (until water temperature is 167-180 degrees)
Drop in one teabag or 1.5 teaspoons of loose leaves in a strainer
Cover & steep for 1-4 minutes, to desired strength

Herbal

cup of tea
Herbal teas have a range of steeping needs depending on the specific type of herbs & flowers used; however, as a basic rule, the following instructions should make a pretty perfect cup of any type of herbal tea.

To make a perfect cup of Herbal Tea:
Bring 8-12 ounces of purified water to a boil
Drop in one teabag or 1.5 teaspoons of loose leaves in a strainer
Cover & steep for 4-8 minutes, to desired strength

Iced

cup of tea
As a general rule, double the tea:water ratio when making iced tea -- you're going to water down that tea with all the ice you'll be adding!

What that means in real terms is you should use 3 teaspoons for every 8-12 ounces of water instead of 1 tsp. A strong steep will lead to a robust tea, not watered-down yuck.

In general, steeping times remain the same for hot-brewed Iced Tea.

Notes

*8 ounces is only one US cup, but your typical mug will be closer to 10-12 ounces.
**1.5 teaspoons makes a strong 8 ounce or a standard 12 ounce cup of tea.

This temperature is such a helpful guide. It is nice to see that "purified" water is mentioned. Keep in mind, any additional minerals in the water can change the taste of your cup of tea.

Hi, Bruno! Thank you for the feedback. We're so happy you've found our guide useful! Yes, we always want our clients to keep in mind that tap water in different places contains different amounts of hard minerals and impurities and these can certainly have an effect on the taste of your tea! We look forward to hearing more of your feedback. Best, The SESA PURE Team

Thanks for explaining that most herbal teas should steep for 4-8 minutes, though they make have more specific instruction based on what they contain. I started getting a stuffy nose this morning and want to buy a medicinal tea blend in case I'm coming down with a cold or the flu. Since I haven't made tea in a long time, the basic instructions you shared here will be really helpful!

For those of you who can’t imagine a day without a burst of caffeine – courtesy of 1 or 2 cups of black tea – new research indicates it may not be harmful for you after all. It may sound strange but ancient teas – green and black – both come from leaves of the Camellia Sinensis plant. Yet, there are 2 processing techniques. While the leaves of both are withered, rolled and heated, black tea leaves go through a fermenting process prior to the final heating. The benefits of black tea are discussed as:-

Flowering tea, also known as blooming tea, is a handcrafted bundle of white and green tea leaves. They usually come crumpled artistically into clusters. You then place the clumps in hot water, which gets them to unfurl their leaves beautifully. The drinker is stimulated by not only the delicious taste of the tea but its aesthetics as well.

Here is my viewpoint:
1) You can boil water and add tea leaves to it.
2) The steeping temperature should be around 80-90 degrees.
3) You can keep the leaves or bag for about 2-3 minutes tops and your tea is ready. This is specifically true for green tea as it keeps prevents it from making it bitter.
